Ping-Pong Table |
I was very nervous going into my
first day of work as a marketing intern for Shiftgig because I’ve never had an
internship before and didn’t know what to expect. Finding the building wasn’t
difficult, although the commute was longer than I expected, and my boss greeted
me at the door when I arrived which eased my nerves. Matt, the business
development manager/my boss, introduced me to a couple of people on the
marketing team and then gave me a brief run-through of the company and their
current goals.
Shiftgig is a start-up that’s about
3 years old so the majority of people who work there are in their 20s and 30s.
The people I’ve been directly working with are only a couple of years
older than me, which is nice because I don’t feel intimidated to ask questions.
The overall environment of the office is very friendly and relaxed; there’s
even a ping-pong table for employees to play at when they are stressed and need
a break. On my first day I dressed business casual to play it safe because I
didn’t know the dress code, but soon realized that everyone dresses completely
casual and wearing leggings, a t-shirt and converse is completely
acceptable.

So far I’ve been researching
restaurants in my assigned research market cities, Los Angeles and Miami, and
inputting their contact information into Shiftgig’s database. I’ve also been
writing content for their business-oriented blog that offers articles on
everything from the newest restaurant trends to advice on growing business.
Every morning that I work, Matt and I discuss what I want to do (he gives me the choice) and then I spend the rest of the day doing
that without interruption or instruction. It’s nice to have the freedom to work
on what I want, but I'm excited for Matt to give me more challenging assignments that will
more actively involve me in the marketing process.
Your internship sounds very interesting. What exactly is your job, and what does Shiftgig do?
ReplyDeleteThe people at Shiftgig sound awesome! I also have a really approachable, welcoming boss, so I understand how helpful that is in feeling comfortable at your internship the first few days. The writing opportunities you've been given thus far sound awesome, but have you found time to use the Ping-Pong table, too? I'm excited for you!
