The First Week

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to share a little bit about the first week of my internship. First of all, it started off on a little bit of a dry note, since the first three days were just a basic orientation to the program. During that time we covered a lot of topics, such as the importance of compliance in healthcare, University of Michigan employee rules and regulations, and hospital safety procedures. However, once we got past these parts of the orientation the material became a lot more interesting. For example, we learned about the benefits that the MiChart system will provide for the hospital, such as putting all online hospital actions and procedures under one system, which reduces the overall cost of online services for the University of Michigan Health System and lessens the number of system based errors. During Orientation, we also had the opportunity to hear from each of the leaders of the different divisions within the project. During their lectures, they told us about their specific jobs in the MiChart program, as well as the functions of each of their MiChart applications, and how their software is going to improve the way clinicians provide care. We spent the next two days working on computers in order to familiarize ourselves with some of the basic programs we are going to use while working on the floor. We were taught how to use some potentially useful applications, such as those that allow us to video chat other MiChart technicians or take control of another person’s mouse, both of which give me and the other specialist the ability to solve any technical issues much quicker. After that, we were taught how to use the paging and phone systems, as well as the proper phone etiquette for communicating with other health providers in the hospital.
