I ran out of prompts except for the last one so going to be more creative here:
My boss was off last week for two days, which was extremely nice. Since I am working eight hours a day and commuting about 3 total, it's a relief when I get to relax, even though I like the job a lot. So the interesting thing about PR is that while there is a lot of creative work, writing, reaching out to editors, there is also a lot of annoying busy work that is just not fun to do. This includes sending out samples, and essentially just typing things to excel all day. Well, since my boss was off that meant that when I returned two days ago I had to make up all that busy work that I wasn't there for. I spent my entire day on excel and packing boxes, which was not what I would call a fun day. On the flip side, I move through the work really fast. Yesterday, my boss actually had me work with the brand comm/marketing people because she didn't have anything for me to do. They had me do research on some of the competitor's social media strategies, which I found interesting. It was nice to help out another team and do something beyond PR. Looking at this job though I have to say, I feel like I could literally drop out of school tomorrow and be able to do it, without further education. I really do like it, but feel like for my final career I really want to do something more academically stimulating. I especially feel this way because when I am not here, all the random busy work I do is done by my boss. I know that no job is fun, but I can't imagine doing that for an actual living.
I feel like any internship would involve a lot of busy work because at this age we don't have degrees and aren't seen as fully capable of taking on the full, real job. Once you are out of school, you might find that this field is actually academically stimulating and that your education really helps you with it, or you may not, but you never know! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI know exactly how you feel about the busy work! A lot of my days include calling people and then just entering all of the information into spreadsheets. I do think its good that you were able to see other aspects of the company; I wish I had been able to do that! Sounds like a fun experience, even with the busy work :)
