My experience at UofM definitely prepared me for my
internship experience. The workload in a typical semester at UofM is definitely
more than the amount of work I received over the course of the last few weeks. It
was refreshing to be able to focus on one story at a time. My liberal arts
education has prepared me in some ways, like by teaching me how to meet
deadlines and work with others. But there were other tasks that my UofM
education definitely did not prepare me for. For example, many of the programs
I used were very foreign to me. I used to learn Prestige Adobe InCopy and the
online programming Ellington. Both were programs with lots of small details. If
you forgot one of the steps along the way of, for example, publishing a story
online, you could mess up the entire domain. I keep my notes out even five
weeks in when I’m performing tasks like these just to make sure I don’t miss
anything.
Today was my last day editing the high school program
student’s stories. I am really glad that part of my internship is over. Though
it was good practice working on my spelling and grammar skills and learning how
to fact check, I found the work very monotonous. I learned that being strictly a
copy editor is not something I would aspire to do. I now have a large
appreciation for those who copy edit my stories and have the patients and
attention to detail that is necessary in producing a newspaper.
