My internship at the US Attorney's Office has come to a close, and looking back, I feel like I was more prepared than I thought I was going to be. My position required me to do a lot of research. My experience at Uof M writing numerous research papers paid off! I completed my research promptly and thoroughly. In fact, my supervisors were very impressed with my work. Unfortunately, most of my internship had nothing to do with my Political Science background, like I originally thought it would. I was able to visit the courtroom and speak with some lawyers, however, which directly related to my career goals. My background in English seemed like it was more useful. I wasn't particularly surprised by anything that I encountered. I was surprised at how quickly I could get things done. I had to be very independent throughout my internship. I wasn't in the position to constantly be asking people about every little problem I encountered or every question I had. College obviously taught me to be more independent. As college students, we have to take the initiative to get our assignments done, write papers, and fit in enough studying time so that we won't fail, while still managing to feed ourselves and also have a little fun. Multi-tasking is imperative. It was an important part of my internship as well. If I had this internship before attending UofM, I doubt I would've been as successful.
That's so great that you felt prepared for your internship and were able to apply skills you learned/used at school this summer. I also felt my internship didn't have much to do with my current Communications background, but it helped me know what aspects of the Communications field (i.e. marketing, advertising, PR) that I do and don't want to pursue in my future career. Congrats on finishing up your summer internship!
