Now that I'm about halfway through my summer at HSI, a routine has started to develop and I am quite familiar with the day-to-day tasks in the office. That is to say, these tasks have not been without difficulty. In the world of production there is a duality between office work and on-set work which are very different. Although the day-to-day has remained relatively constant, the people and the specific tasks vary greatly. When a commercial is being shot, small crews join the office and occupy one of the bays. The difficulty in this is working with many different people for short periods at a time and having to adjust to their tendencies and preferences. Although, it presents a great opportunity to make connections through out the industry.
I had asked my supervisor about how to approach this and she mentioned that it is just getting to know more people and that even though it gets mundane introducing myself to different people three times a week, that being attentive and ready to assist the crews in whatever they need is key. On some occasions I work on set during the actual shooting of the commercials that these crews are prepping for, so it is definitely a great learning experience seeing it from concept to actualization.
Some weeks there are no crews occupying the bays because they are all on location in another state and sometimes another country, and the office is really calm and slow. In dealing with this my supervisor said that that's just the nature of the industry and that I should take that time to do my own research and work on my own projects.
That's great that you are becoming comfortable with the tasks. I feel that most jobs are about routine, and as you become comfortable in what you do, you will improve and become better at it. It sounds like you are getting a great learning experience.
