Earlier in my summer, I was told that I would
be working on a project from the very start. One of my company’s clients hosts
an annual day where over 1,000 participating museums across the country open
their doors to the public for free. Publicizing this event was my number one
task, and I was to do this with very little guidance. I started by making a
list of long lead print publications through Internet searches and a computer
program called CisionPoint. I then needed to write a pitch and send it out to
all of the contacts I found. After many emails and phone calls, I have actually
had great success in getting coverage for the event. Now, I have moved onto
online outlet, finding and contacting people who work for different websites.
Soon, I will move to broadcast and radio. I have also been contact mayors of
cities that have a museum participating to collect as many mayoral
proclamations as possible. I use the impression numbers from last year as a
goal, trying to surpass the amount of coverage that the event received, which
would make me extremely proud of myself. My supervisor for this event has been
very complimentary and has encouraged me to continue to work hard to get as
much coverage as possible.
This project has made me realize how much
interns actually do for a business. It’s so stereotypical and expected that
they’re just the ones stapling packets together, but now I see the
responsibility that so many interns have and I am thrilled to work for a
company that gives me that type of experience.
It is great that they gave you so much freedom to be creative and not just give you work that anyone can do! Glad that you were successful on your project and it sounds like you have learned a lot from the fact that they gave you such vague guidelines.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like your hard work is paying off. Good for you on acting independently and succeeding with this!
ReplyDeleteYou're extremely lucky your company gives you so much freedom and responsibilities. My summer internship is very similar in that regard. I also have completed similar tasks this summer like using CisionPoint, writing pitches, and helping to plan/execute an event. Congrats on everything and I hope you continue to enjoy your summer internship!
ReplyDeleteHey Lauren,
ReplyDeleteI am also in the PR field so I know how intense and frustrating getting coverage could be. Seems like you really know what you are doing though! Great job! Keep up the good work!
