Catch up

I'm very behind on my posts so let me catch you up on what I've been doing so far at Atlantic Records. So far, I really love it here... I was incredibly lucky to find an internship working in a field that I really love and am really passionate about, music.
I work 4 days a week and am given a number of responsibilities and tasks to complete on a daily basis. My responsibilities mainly have to do with researching new talent that's out there since I work in the A&R department (Artists & Repetoire). A&R is responsible for finding new artists to sign and working with them to pick out singles and create their albums. The research I do is mainly going through different charts whether it be iTunes, Shazam, Spotify or any other outlet that artists release their music (blogs/websites). Being able to contribute is a very gratifying feeling, since the work I do leads to new artists being signed and new great songs for everyone to listen to!

  1. Wow, certainly sounds like a gratifying job. Ever heard of Chamberlain or Nay Palm; those fellas gotta be signed by now for Pete's sake!!

  2. Do you get to actually listen to any of the music and pick yourself or is it more analysis of how the songs/artists are doing?

  3. That sounds like a pretty sweet job! I'd be interested to hear especially how you create albums and choose which songs to be on it/to be singles, etc.

  4. @Jeremy, most of what I do is researching new artists. So I'm constantly listening to new music whether it be on blogs or different websites/streaming services.

@Evan, as an intern it's not my responsibility to be evaluating our artists new music before it is released.. but from what I've learned from my supervisors/executives is that it's a lot about trusting your gut and being able to judge whether or not you think a song could be successful regardless of your personal music tastes.
