Sorry for the late posts. I wanted to make sure that I got enough photos from my internship so I that is the reason that I have not been able to post for a while. However, I now have the photos.
I have finally finished the inventory of the drawers in the 1st floor of the museum! 200 drawers have all been cataloged. However, I have discovered that I actually wanted to add suggestions to all of these drawers. Not only that, I had suggestions for the the exhibit to make. Overall, I hope my ideas will be sufficient and that I will not be copying ideas from the second or third floors (which I have yet to visit).
Since we have been busy with our Iftar event, Sophie decided that we would do our midterm evaluation while giving out flyers in the neighborhood. I have overall been very satisfied by the work I've been doing. There has not been as much work with actual history as I thought but I generally enjoy things. Sophie gave me the rundown on how museum funding works during this workshop and the endless number of abbreviations of bureaucratic organizations the museum has to work with. It sounds awful and the worst part is that the government rewards museums that spend the least amount of money without rewarding those who have the best events/ exhibits. Anyways, Sophie says I have been doing a very good job and that everyone seems to be very pleased.
The one thing that I have surprised myself with is my ability to actually hand out flyers in the neighborhood. Sophie needed me to do this on my own as she had to get to an appointment. I hesitantly accepted but she put her confidence in me. I was able to distribute the flyers and use my German and surprisingly, it went really well. I really do not like talking and "campaigning" I suppose but I gained the confidence to do it in German which was nice. I just kind of faced it and said what I needed to say to get through it.
So overall I had a very successful week and it was very rewarding.
When you write about your hesitation to hand out flyers, I know how you feel! There have definitely been moments in my summer internship -and other jobs -that I get nervous to do something new by myself. But Sophie obviously trusts in your ability to work well, which is one of the best things I think an employer can do.
