What is interesting about the place I intern at is that not
everyone in the office works for Barr-Harris Children’s Grieving Center, though
everyone in the office does do something with Psychology. In fact, only two
people who are regularly at the office work at Barr-Harris. One is my boss
named Judy and she is the director of Barr-Harris, and the other person is
named Sarah and she works on site with families who are grieving. Fridays are
an exception though, and this is a time where a bunch of the psychoanalysts
from all different Barr-Harris sites come to the office and discuss what they
did the past week, any progress they made, and interesting news they came
across. Sarah could possibly serve as a mentor to me; she is doing the
Barr-Harris intern program for after graduate school, which allows her to work
with families on site. I wish to work clinically with people one day, but until
graduate school that is not an option. I feel as though the internship Sarah
has would be a really awesome way to experience the clinical aspects of
Psychology, and for me to get experience with psychoanalysis. Although she
majored in social work and is in school for her PhD and I am majoring in
Psychology and am aiming for my PsyD, the paths we take are somewhat similar. I
spoke with her a bit about the difference between the two and whereas a PhD
focuses more on philosophy and research, a PsyD focuses on psychology clinical
work. As we discussed my future aspirations, she agreed that a PsyD would be
the right path for me, and that working at Barr-Harris now is a great way to
get a feel for Psychology and Psychoanalysis.
It is great to know that someone you work with can give you advice and guidance! I am having a similar experience in my internship
