Looking Back, Overall Insight
UofM has prepared me for my internship at OXO in a much different way than I ever would have guessed. Unfortunately, as a psychology major, it is hard to say that I have learned anything, specifically in my classes that could possibly help me in the world of PR. If UofM was to really prepare me for the technicalities, it would have taught me more about using Microsoft Office. However, it is not fair to say that UofM has not prepared me at all for this internship. At college, I have learned to write in a way that I have never written before. And those written skills now are very applicable to my internship. Aside from that, being at a big school has taught me a lot about how to get along with people and work together in groups, other skills that I have found necessary for this internship. As of now, I have not been very surprised by anything other than the level of responsibility I have been given as an intern. It was a little surprising at first, and a little uncomfortable in the sense that for the first time, I really didn't have anyone holding my hand and telling me what I am doing right and wrong on a regular basis. However, I have handled this by learning to trust my own instinct and evidently, that has caused me to gain a lot of confidence and thrive in this environment.

That's great to hear that you were able to grow from your internship. I am having a similar experience with my own internship.
ReplyDeleteIt's great that the university helped prepare you for your internship.. I know a lot of internships are learn as you go so you definitely had a one-up for your experience!
ReplyDeleteI understand what you mean in regards to the amount U of M has and has not prepared you. There are definitely some real world skills (like microsoft office) that I wish classes incorporated more, but like you said the university has definitely helped me with my internship as well. It's great that you think your writing skills have improved and widened because writing is so important in any field. It's also great that you are confident in yourself and the responsibilities you are given because your confidence will be recognized by your bosses!
ReplyDeleteIt's cool how UM didn't necessarily teach you about PR because of your Psych major but that learning to problem solve and write well has helped you anyhow!
