As the end of my internship is slowly
approaching, I am quickly realizing how much I have learned the past month.
When asked how my experience at U of M has prepared me for my internship, the
obvious answer should be yes, but as I reflect on my liberal arts education the
answer is not as simple. There are number of situations and skills that my
education has undoubtedly prepared me for. For example, how to meet deadlines
and how to work in group settings. College is unquestionably demanding and
stressful for a reason and after interning for just a few works I understand
why that is.
Two programs that I use constantly at U
of M is excel and PowerPoint. During the course of my internship I have been
given a number of tasks that these programs were required. My boss also trusts
that I will get all my tasks done efficiently and promptly and my professors do
not hold me to any lesser standards.
Prior to starting my internship there
were a few communications/PR programs I was uniformed of. Other interns were
taught how to access and use these programs/skills at their Universities and I
initially felt clueless and inexperienced. I quickly learned how to use each
program (CisionPoint) and certain writing techniques that are integral in PR (the
proper formatting for a press release.) I couldn’t be happier that I’m working
at CVM this summer because they have provided me with new skills that I can use
the rest of my career.
So,
now the cool stuff: this
week has been EXTRA CRAZY in the
office because next week is the big event for our jewelry client;
Fortune&Frame. One of my tasks was to go on Cision and various other sites
in order to create a guest list. The list consists of fashion bloggers, fashion
magazine (Cosmopolitan, Glamour, ELLE, etc.) journalists, celebrity stylists,
and many other people that we will be inviting to the event. I can’t wait to
continue planning for the event and actually get to go and see who shows up!
I’ll be sure to post some pictures afterward too.
I also learned to use Cision this summer and found that even though it was a new tool, it is very easy to learn!
ReplyDeleteIt's great that your internship allowed you to learn about important PR skills and programs that can definitely benefit you in the future. I have never heard of Cision until now, and I am curious to see how it works. Hopefully you can use this program in your upcoming semesters at U of M for a comm class!
