A Rough Day in the Office

Hello, I’m back again!

The line, “rough day in the office” definitely sums up my day yesterday – it wasn’t exactly a “rough” day, but it definitely was intense. Yesterday, me and the other interns had to pitch our products to magazine editors in order to get coverage. We learned that some editors will not respond at all, that some will respond and accept or reject our pitch, and few may send a nasty response back. The interns and I were very nervous about getting a mean response back, but we found out that it rarely happens so we all felt a little better.

I began sending out my first few pitches… AND that’s when I realized that I was doing it all wrong. I sent the wrong pitches to the wrong magazines!!!! Before I freaked out, I immediately told my supervisor what happened and she said there was nothing I could do about it. Luckily I only emailed five magazine editors before I realized my mistake. Luckily, one of the editors responded back to me and loved my pitch and hardly even realized the huge mistake I made. I was really upset and nervous that I was going to get into trouble, but I realized there was absolutely nothing I could do about the error I made.

As if that didn’t already make my day hard, another intern on my team emailed an editor and received a rude response back (which I thought would never happen). The editor basically yelled at the intern and pointed out all the faults in her email. This is when I realized I wasn’t the only who was having an unlucky day.
Although there was nothing we could do from any of these mistakes or occurrences, I realized that things like this in the real world always happen. You can’t get upset if you make a mistake and you can’t get upset when someone criticizes your work or responds in a negative way.

On the positive side though, it’s really cool that we are allowed to email and communicate with editors from magazines!

  1. Damn that is rough Amanda, but it happens to the best of us. Keep your chin up and keep chugging along-it will be well worth it in the future!

  2. I'm sorry this happened but it seems like you learned all that you could from the situation. That is a great outlook and will continue to help you in the future.

  3. These moments are unfortunate but they will become great learning experiences to be more careful with your future work. Don't worry and good luck with the rest of the internship.

  4. Aw I'm sorry about your rough patch but keep your head up! We all have bad days and as long as you can recover and learn from it, you will benefit for the future! Good luck with the rest of your internship!

  5. That stinks you didn't have the best day in the office. But don't worry, it seemed that other people working with you didn't have a great day either. It is difficult putting yourself out there and also a bit embarrassing if you by accident send out the wrong thing-- you handled it like a true champ! Go Amanda :)
