Blog Post 6: CEO for a Day

Even if I haven't had the opportunity to work with her much directly, I've grown to admire Amy, the Midwest Director for Food Network Magazine and "CEO" of our team, immensely. She is constantly doing something, and it is amazing to observe how she manages to keep tabs on so many people and things all at once and still maintain a composed and admired status among her clients and peers.

Just below Amy are account managers and executives, and Sara, my boss, is a sales assistant. While I understand that there needs to be a progression from one title to the next as one's experience grows, I wish there was more teamwork done between people from different levels. I found myself nervous to ask to listen in on sales calls with someone above me because my boss has said she rarely sits in on calls or gets a chance to observe a client pitch meeting. I wish there were more opportunities for account managers to work with assistants and so on, because they provide a great teaching and learning opportunity.

Overall, my internship at Food Network Magazine, my first "real" internship opportunity, was an amazing experience. My boss really made my experience; she was an amazing, patient, trusting teacher. I learned sales skills that I would feel confident performing on my own in an entry level position, and that I would not have had a chance to gain without my internship. Working at a magazine is something I could potentially see doing in my future. However, I think it's super important to explore al options while I still can to help me determine what I'm truly interested in. Next summer, I think I want an internship program experience in a digital field, whether creative or in sales, I would love to spend a summer in New York City, and it wouldn't hurt to have a paid internship!

  1. Hey Sarah!

I totally agree and I think it is very important for companies to have more movement and communication between people at different levels. It definitely makes a better work environment. You should try and spend a summer in New York too - I live here and it is seriously a great place to live and work. There is always something going on and every day is new and exciting.

  3. Interning at Food Network Magazine sounds awesome! It's amazing that this one opportunity has opened you up to the idea that this could be your future career. I think another internship in the digital field would be nice, especially if it could lead you to combining that with a career at a magazine :)
