As I've mentioned before, there is a certain duality when it comes to working at a production company. In movies, television, and the like I would assume it is the same- where there are two "offices". There is the literal brick and mortar building as well as the set environment. The overarching CEO of the company are the executive producers who are in the office everyday, although on set, the one who steers the ship is the director. And although the director has to meet the demands of the EPs and the client, on shoot days the director is the one who is in command. However, with shaping the company culture and managing the business as a whole, the executive producers are the key players.
If I were to assume this position for a day, I would strive to do exactly what the EPs are doing on a daily basis. It is, instead, with the industry that I would attempt to make changes. Currently, despite the virality of music videos on Youtube and elsewhere on the internet, the market and budgets awarded for commercials are much larger than those for music videos. And, while companies (unless they specifically do music videos) sway towards doing more commercials, I would try to lock down more low-budget music videos that can be produced more rapidly. Although this is restricted by the industries trends, if I were CEO I would try to lean towards producing more music videos, creating a stronger presence in that market.
I think your idea sounds really effective-especially because music videos are actually such a huge part of our culture today!!
ReplyDeleteWhy do you think is reason that commercials get a bigger budget? It would be interesting to hear more of your reasoning behind wanting to make a shift in focus from commercials to music videos!
