CEO For the Day!

Although I felt that my summer internship provided me with a very rich and beneficial opportunity there are definitely some aspects of my experience that I wish would have turned out differently. One of those things in particular would be how the program was initially organized. Even though my internship provided me and the other interns with a month just dedicated to instruction and practicing with the MiChart system a combination of disorganization and, in my opinion, inadequate training made me quite unprepared for GoLive. If I was in charge of the program I would have taken a few different steps to ensure that my interns were well prepared and confident in their abilities to perform. First, I would have had a more structured training schedule to ensure that my interns were actively practicing using the system, but to, also, guarantee that they were using the training time towards work related material and not distractions such as Facebook or YouTube. The second step I would take to ensure that my students were ready for GoLive would be to get them exposed to working on their unit as early as possible. By allowing the students extra time to work with their assigned units it would have made the transition from training to the actual environment much easier. First, it would allow the students to become more comfortable working on the hospital floors and provide them with experience working with the live MiChart environment, helping them build confidence prior to GoLive. Second, it would allow the interns to troubleshoot any known issues before GoLive, as well as build an early relationship with the hospital staff on their assigned unit. By taking these steps I believe the MiChart Internship Program would be almost perfect.
