Last post from my last weeks at the DAH

The fourth week was interesting as I had not only a new assignment in the office as well as my first two tour. Since the tours happened in the first part of the week, I’ll talk about them first. I have to give two tours of the museum to two different groups. Although I was giving the same tour to each of the groups, it felt like I was giving two very different tours. The first group was a German-American tour with families from (mostly) Wisconsin. Even though I had forgotten what I needed to say in the first part of the tour (about how the museum cards function), they asked so many questions that I had time to discuss that with them. For the most part, it did not even feel like I was giving a tour but just trying to create a good story of what had happened to their ancestors. I certainly enjoyed and they were happy about it too (I had never received a tip for doing anything before…a calendar, but nonetheless)! The second group…was full of teenagers. Many of them were from Virginia but there were also German students stuck in there too. Although both tours lasted for 90 minutes, this one felt a bit longer. The teenagers for the most part had no interest in being there and were not paying attention. As such, being friendly and trying to give them all the information about our museum was difficult. I did not forget to tell anything to them but it was certainly a different experience. This was certainly one of my first big experiences with trying to convey information to a general audience in a short period of time.
Oh and my new assignment, I am now going to be translating the tour on our special exhibit from German to English. I was so tired of having researched industrialization that I took to my new assignment very quickly. It has not been too difficult and I hope to get the assignment done next week. I also intend on finishing my industrialization research next week as well…otherwise I will never be done. Note to self: Make outlines, organize and don’t overexert.

I’m sad to say this but I think this will be last blog post. As from Wednesday until next week, I will be traveling, I will not be able to discuss my last week with you guys (well, except at the presentation). It has been fun posting here and I hope all of your internships are going well!!

  2. It's good to see that you've taken everything in stride, going after your new translation task and having to basically do different kinds of tours each time. Learning to go with the flow is an important part of your work experience. Good luck with the rest of it!
