So I entered my fourth week of work, and it is starting to feel like a normal routine now! I am no longer half asleep as I eat my breakfast or enter the DNC building. I am no longer counting down the minutes until lunch, and then of course the end of the day. This new surge of energy has taken over and I have started doing many more things around the office and around DC.
We got headsets the other day and are now answering phone calls from donors and dealing with various issues with them. It was nerve-wracking at first. I mean, who talks on the phone anymore these days? There was also always the constant fear of messing up or chatting on the phone with a disgruntled DNC donor. But so far, people have been genuine, kind and rather interesting. We got a phone script and certain talking points, since we are essentially representing the DNC on the phone with these donors, who often give every month- sustaining the day to day activities at the DNC.
In addition to our daily tasks and our new phone adventures, we also had the great opportunity of seeing an all staff DNC meeting last week. The CEO Amy Dacey and the Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz both spoke to give new notices about projects the DNC is working on (classified information of course) and updates on things going on in the Democratic party in general. It was so refreshing to see the 200 plus employees gather together in such an open and relaxed environment. I mean, we had a congresswomen right in front of us and she chatted with everyone on a first name basis! There was also the exciting news about the beginning stages of planning for the next Democratic National Convention. The locations who currently have bids include Birmingham, Cleveland, Columbus, New York, Philadelphia and Phoenix. It is amazing that two years in advance the planning has already begun!
The last interesting thing to happen in the last week was a special visit from Vice President Joe Biden to the DNC. While, we didn't actually see the VP, we saw plenty of secret service scouring the building. The amount of preparation that is involved for him to go anywhere is mind blowing. The elevators were sealed off. Secret service was checking every crevice of the building, and some were even checking the parked cars outside. The VP was coming to use the DNC's media room in the basement. But there are also offices in the basement. So people's doors were taped and covered so they wouldn't be able to even catch a glimpse of Biden. While no one actually saw him, on the bright side everyone got to leave early because once he was in the building no one was allowed in or out until he was finished!
Tomorrow, we go on a tour of the Capitol building and there are a lot of other fun things coming up as well!
