First week of my start-up incubator internship
This summer I'm interning at a small start-up incubator called VentureSHOT. Since this is my fourth internship thus far I came to my first week of work with a pretty large set of expectations. I just finished spending a semester in DC participating in the Michigan in Washington program, which included a full-time internship, evening classes, and a research paper. While in DC I worked for a non-profit good-government group, and I really enjoyed the substantial fellowship program which provided interns with concrete guides on how to complete tasks, as well as professional development workshops. I can already tell that my experience working in Chicago's entrepreneur community will be wildly different, with much less structure, and I'm excited!
I've never had a part-time internship before, so the pace of this internship has felt a little slow thus far. I spent most of my first week being introduced to coworkers, meeting the entrepreneurs that are in VentureSHOT's programs, and learning about the work that I'll be doing this summer. I had several meetings about what my boss would like me to create as far as the editorial calendar, campaigns, and social media go. It has been a little frustrating having to ask a ton of questions in order to understand what I should be creating, but being able to create work with a lot of freedom is nice.
This Thursday we had a big work event called Food, Fun, and Fashion which was designed to showcase some of the products from VentureSHOT's start-ups. The event was held in a beautiful studio called Interior Define (pictured below). It was a frenzy of people sampling food and drinks while listening to pitches, and for me it was a great introduction to the heart of Chicago's entrepreneur space. I had such a blast this week and I can't wait for the rest of the summer!
