Week 2.5-ish in Baltimore

It’s currently a rain delay here at Camden Yards, so I’m writing my second post. Unfortunately, that means my coworkers found out about this blog, so they’re reading my first one. Oops.

Anyway, I’m working alongside Dan Connolly and Eduardo Encina, the Baltimore Sun’s two Orioles beat writers. Dan is currently on the phone with his wife. And it’s pouring out, so the game has been put on pause.

Both of them have served as great mentors. I’ve really appreciated that both feel comfortable complaining about their jobs in front of me, so I know they’re not painting an inaccurate picture of what a life in journalism is like. It’s hard work, and often tedious, but I still think it’s rewarding and worthwhile.

I write at least two stories from each home game. Here are a couple:

Here’s the advice Dan and Ed gave me to succeed in journalism: I should take advantage of my time at Michigan to earn a broad, liberal arts-based education so I know about a lot of things. Covering sports isn’t just about the games anymore; I need to know business, economics, health and “all sorts of things,” according to Ed.

Hope everyone else is enjoying their internships too!

  1. wow that's awesome stuff Alejandro. As a huge baseball fan myself I am very curious as to what the sports reporting industry entails. Your insight makes it seem like it has a laid-back feel and seems like a lot of fun. Also interesting to see that its more than just sports "...business, economics, health...". Cool stuff.

    1. Hi Ian!

It's not quite laid back, since almost everyone is working on tight deadlines. Tonight, the game ended in a walk-off, which had everyone scrambling to re-work articles in time so that they'd be in the paper the next morning. It's not always glamorous, but there's something special about writing something that so many people care about.

As for a day-to-day schedule, I get to the ballpark at 3 pm for clubhouse media availability, which ends at about 4:30. Then I write a pregame story, grab food, watch the game, and have one or two more stories after it ends.

      Thanks for reading!
