Sunset in New York City |
The Baltimore Sun actually has a lot more interns than I expected. There are five of us on sports (four writers and one editor), but every section seems to have at least a few. We had an intern seminar today on how to develop and maintain sources, which I thought was really helpful. I went bowling with the sports interns last week, and earlier in the summer, we got free passes to a pre-screening of Edge of Tomorrow. Maybe that makes them feel better about not paying us.
Anyway, the nice thing about writing is that you get feedback whether you want to or not. First, editors change things, and then, readers are very willing to voice their own opinions. One thing the Sun does well is that they’ve set up folders for each of the interns where editors can leave first versions of our stories with comments to help us improve.
This has certainly been a different experience than working for The Michigan Daily or USA Today, where I interned last summer. I write shorter stories but more of them, I have responsibilities every day and I certainly have less freedom to be creative, though that’s more a product of being so busy. But it’s been a valuable summer so far, and it’s hard to believe it’s almost July.
It’s hard to ask for time off, especially since I don’t want anyone to feel like I’m not committed or working hard enough, but I spent Friday-Sunday in New York City with some friends. Turned out the Orioles were in New York those days too, but I blissfully ignored them.
Has anyone else been following the World Cup? I went to a sports bar to watch USA vs. Ghana, and it was awesome.
Alejandro,
ReplyDeleteYour comment "Maybe that makes them feel better about not paying us" made me laugh. My internship is unpaid, too, and it can be very frustrating. Working without pay is unfair in my opinion. We're college students so we want/need to make money, but also need a good-looking resume. Finding a balance can be hard, but it sounds like you're doing a good job. Keep it up!
And yes, I've been watching the World Cup. The Portugal game still makes me cringe.
Your internship sounds really hands on and practical. What kind of work do you eventually want to get into?
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a really cool opportunity! Not only are you around successful visits, but you're also getting to actually write and get feedback! Do you get to pitch your own stories, or do they tell you what to write?
ReplyDeleteAt first, they were telling me what to write, but as the summer's progressed, I've been able to write what I want. Thanks for reading!
