Getting to Know My Colleagues

I am the youngest person in the office.   Young usually means inexperienced as well, which means I can learn a lot from the people I work with.  My supervisor is in charge of two other interns besides myself.  They both are in the Homeland Security program at a local college.  They both are graduating seniors, one of them even a captain in the U.S. army.  Surprisingly, I get along with them better than I thought I would.  Their work deals more with law enforcement compared to the community outreach work I’m doing, but we still get to spend a lot of time together since we work close by.  And it’s good to know I’m not the only intern around.

I tend to gravitate towards the younger people on the staff, probably because I can better understand people closer to my age.  For example, the U.S. Attorney’s secretary and I share a good rapport.  I often give her updates of the work I’ve accomplished because I feel like I’d be bothering the U.S. Attorney, who I’m sure is constantly busy with other pressing matters.  I’ve gotten to know a member of the IT staff really well.  He too is pretty young and was nice enough to take on the mission of tracking down different attorneys so that I could speak with them about what it is like to be an attorney.

I’ve only briefly met with a few attorneys, but that is good enough for me!  Of all of the people I work with, these are the people who can help me most when it comes to better understand the career I want.  I’ve always wanted to be a lawyer ever since I was a child…well barring every first grader’s dream of becoming President.  Anyways, I knew about all the requirements of getting into law school before starting my internship, but talking with these attorneys has taken me out of my dream world.  Many of them have told me that I might have to start out doing menial tasks and putting in long hours before I’ll reach the status of the fancy lawyer in the swanky pantsuits with the expensive, imported car that every future law student aspires to be.

  1. I can definitely understand gravitating towards people closer to your own age. I have found that I do that at my internship too. It is easier to relate to people who are in a similar position as you. But it's also great that you are able to speak with people who are working in your dream position! You must be learning a lot.
