The employees at Make-A-Wish Michigan act as a team so there is a lot of mentoring, both formal and informal, that I see happening around me. My supervisor has been great so far as a mentor for me. She gives me a lot of professional advice, such as don't ever type something in an email that you wouldn't want other people to see. Office politics is a real issue and somebody could easily get you fired by printing off what you write and showing it to others. My supervisor is willing to help out anyone in the office, even if they are in different departments. I really admire this quality in her as a mentor because I think it is important to work as a team in the workplace. Another quality I admire in her as a mentor is her willingness to show me all aspects of her job and even other employees jobs even though she is very busy and has a lot of other things she could be doing. She is also very hardworking and is often the last person to leave the office at the end of the day.
Another potential mentor I have is another intern at Make-a-Wish who also goes to U of M. She is a year ahead of me, but has the same educational goals as I do to attend U of M's School of Social Work. I only spoke to her briefly, but I am hoping she can mentor me in the process of applying to the program as she seems like a really motivated and encouraging person.
I also have lunch plans with the CEO of Make-A-Wish Michigan in a couple weeks. She is taking all of the interns out to lunch! I am hoping to make some connections with her and receive from mentoring from her as well.
This sounds great! It is awesome that the CEO is taking the time to take you guys to lunch. It will give you a great networking opportunity, especially if this type of work is what you can see yourself doing in the future!
ReplyDeleteSeems like you are learning great lessons! I agree that using this as a networking opportunity will be huge for the future.
ReplyDeleteYour lunch plans with the CEO sound awesome-what a great opportunity to get to know her better and ask the questions you might not be able to otherwise. Sounds like your mentors really care and you're learning a lot!
