So this is officially my second week at the DNC. In the last week we got to meet all of the other interns, get an awesome tour of the building (we have the Watergate cabinet casually chilling in the basement) and we started on our first projects. Now, us Marketing interns, our first project wasn't as glamorous as some of the other departments. In fact, by the end of it, every single person in the building knew us and felt sorry about the first task assigned. We had to organize the basement storage unit. Now, this may not seem like such a big deal. But you try taking thousands of campaign shirts, sweatshirts, leggings, stickers, buttons etc and dragging them around a dusty, dimly lighted room and counting them (yes, every single thing) and organizing them categorically by type and by size. I believe I counted around 10,000 bumper stickers and over 5,000 buttons, and don't get me started on the t-shirts. But all of our sweat and tears did not come without some free swag, which eased the pain.
On the bright side, our first week we got to wear jeans and sweats, we became best friends with all of the maintenance staff (if you work in an office, these are the best people to be friends with- they will help you with any task that involves lifting organizing etc), and we got a ton of free lunches since everyone pitied us and our manual labor hardships.
Now, it's week 2 and we are out of the basement and on to doing bigger and better things. We are starting to get assigned bigger projects and we have direct supervisors within the department who we will be helping for the remainder of the summer.
The DNC is also great about making sure there is a proper community for interns, we have a ton of seminars and brown bag lunches coming up in various disciplines from resume building to departmental talks.
Being in the main marketing section of the office today has been a new experience from the basement. I used to know when people left work in their cars for lunch and how often they would come to the vending machines in the hall and now I am starting to learn the habits of people working all around me.
Everyone in the office is super funny and nice and sometimes when I go to the printer to do some mundane copying and see something like this --
It somehow puts it all into perspective.
I am sure this week will only continue to get much more interesting
Week 1 seemed rough but I am glad as the weeks go on it has been getting better!
