While it hardly seems that more than half of the summer has escaped us, I am getting towards the end of my internship at Merit. Beginning my internship I was probably most nervous about how my relationships would form with my co-workers, bosses, and other companies we work with. I made it a goal of mine to reach out and try to network with these people. I was initially intimated by the people in power positions: they are so successful and hardworking but also so young. It seems that everyone we have worked with is that way too. But from my internship I have found that people in the social entrepreneurship business are sincere and friendly: they are passionate people.
I tried to pursue my goal of networking that I set for myself at the start of the summer and I believe that I am on a steady track in achieving the goal. I now realize that not all company owners are cut-throat and only worried about their own profits and sales. I have so much more knowledge and respect for cause based companies that I won't see the market the same way again. There are so many companies in our own backyard that (like Merit) that give a percentage of their profits to charities, many around here that are working to restore Detroit. I have changed the way that I spend my money too, now knowing that I can make a difference by buying.
My experience has been more laid-back and creative that I had expected, and knowing that everything is for a great cause is even better. Combining creativity, fashion, and writing is probably my dream job--and that is what I am doing here. Knowing that there is a place in the market for companies like these is inspiring and something that I would like to look into for the future.
